Where Are Camtasia Videos Saved?

Are you a little concerned because you just finished recording something and you have no idea where your Camtasia videos were saved? I’ll showing you where Camtasia saves their videos by default and how you can change it for a better workflow.

I just got a new computer specifically for creating videos. It had been years since I’d installed Camtasia and I forgot that they automatically save in a Camtasia folder by default. I’ve been so use to having set folder structure and workflow.

First, don’t panic. You definitely can find the file you just created. If you don’t change the settings, then Camtasia automatically saves new files to

C:\Users\username\Documents\Camtasia

Camtasia also automatically saves the .TREC files with a timestamp at the file name.

On Mac

On the Mac, the files will automatically be saved to the ~/Movies folder.

You can get to it by clicking on the Icon Finder and Go to Folder and type ~/Movies to get to that folder.

How to Change Default Camtasia File Save Location

If you’ve already recorded the one file, then you’ll just have to go find the recorded file in the location above and move the file where you want it to go. You’ll also have to rename that file.

But for future recordings, just open Camtasia Recorder–>Tools–>Options–>File Options. This is where you can choose how and where things are saved.

First thing you want to do is change the output file folder. It will probably be different for every project, but you can at least pick something like Documents instead of Documents–>Camtasia.

Then, go back up and change the Output File name to Ask for name. This will open a dialogue box every time you finish a recording to choose where to save it and what name to give it.

For all of my projects, I have a company folder, then I create a new project folder for each video tutorial that I do.

They should be there, but if you still can’t find them, try doing a search on your computer for .trec files and it should find where all your camtasia recordings are.
