Are you trying to decide between the Autonomous ErgoChair Pro vs. Aeron Herman Miller? I’ve been looking for a new desk chair and have narrowed it down between the Autonomous ErgoChair Pro and the Aeron by Herman Miller.
In this article, I’ll break down the differences between the two and share with you which one I picked.
Let’s dive in.

Whether you work in an office setting or work from home like I do, you spend a lot of time in your chair. And after a few hours, you start to feel the effects of sitting for a while.
For the last five years, I’ve had a chair that I got from Office Depot. It’s been great honestly. It has all the levers to adjust for lower back, height, arm rests. It even has the most important feature: ability to lean back in the chair.
If I’m thinking about something or just want to take a quick break, I really enjoy being able to lean back to do it. And this chair wasn’t cheap. It’s consistently been around $250. But lately I’ve started feeling the effects of sitting in it during the day.
Since I work remotely on a team, we’ve had several conversations from teammates looking for a better chair. And every time the conversation comes up, people talk about 2 different chairs: the Autonomous ErgoChair Pro and the Aeron by Herman Miller. So, I was quickly able to narrow down my search between these two.
I quickly asked how people who bought it 2 plus years ago how they still like it. And they say that it’s still a great chair. No issues for them. And it still feels like new. That was something that was important to hear because I can feel the age in my current chair.
Autonomous ErgoChair Pro Aeron Comparison
I’ll quickly cover the comparisons between the two of these chairs and which ones were more important to me.
Chair Size
The Aeron has 3 different sizes to choose from while the Autonomous is one size fits all. Personally I like not having to worry if I picked the right size so the Autonomous was a winner for me. Autonomous handles all heights and weight up to 300lbs.
Herman Millers A chair has max weight of 300lb while the B and C can go up to 350lbs.
Tilting Features
Autonomous has a 22 degree tilting range with 5 lockable positions. So if you have a favorite recline, you can lock it in. It also has a tilt tension so you don’t feel like you’re going to go flying back when tilting back.
The Aeron has 3 tilts that you have to choose when ordering.
- Standard- this lets you recline like the Autonomous
- Tilt limiter – keeps the chair from reclining past a certain degree
- Tilt limiter with Tilt forward- if you work slightly forward while working, then this is the one you want to choose.
Armrest Adjustability
You don’t realize how important arm rests are until you’re working at your desk and want to use them for support.
The Autonomous ErgoChair Pro armrests move in and out and up and down.
The Aeron also has tilting functionality in, out, up, down, and they also pivot 15-17 degrees out for maximum adjustment.
Seat Height
Being able to adjust the seat height to your body specs is probably the number one feature when looking for a chair. You need to be able to have your feet flat on the floor when sitting for ergonomic sitting. I still feel like I’m looking for the perfect height for my chair. Both chairs allow you to adjust the seat height for your perfect sitting position.
Head Rest
This will be a new one for me. My current one doesn’t have a head rest. The ErgoChair Pro comes with a headrest that lets you adjust it to your ideal position.
The Aeron doesn’t have a headrest.
Materials Used
ErgoChair Pro is made with polyester fabric and foam mold for the seat and armrests. The Aeron uses something called pellicle sheer fabric. Both are made with recyclable materials.
Pricing
The biggest difference between these two is probably the pricing. The Autonomous ErgoChair Pro is about twice as much as the HomeDepot chair that I bought. Running around $499, it’s not a mindless purchase. Which is why we all spend so much time researching it, right?
But the cool thing is they have a 30 trial period, so if you don’t like it, they will take it back. Make sure to look at the details of their return because it does change if you buy the chair during a sale.
The Herman Miller Aeron runs around $1,495. I’ve loved the look of the Aeron for years, but I’m still not at a spot to buy something at that price. If you have one and want to tell me how much you love it, I’d love to hear from you.
If you are ok with getting refurbished chairs, then you can take a look at SeatingMind
For the price difference and because my teammates have used the ErgoChair Pro for a few years, I chose the ErgoChair Pro. I picked the gray color scheme and it is set to arrive next week. I’ll do a complete rundown of how it looks and my first impressions when it arrives. So stay tuned 🙂
